People looking for UK jobs have more reason to be cheerful after new figures showed that the number of people finding permanent roles rose for the first time in almost 18 months.

Temporary staff appointments also improved according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG Report on Jobs.

Bernard Brown, head of business services at KPMG, said: "This is the first time we have seen really positive news for the UK jobs market in 17 months. However, it is too early to speculate whether this signals the end of the recession."

Mr Brown added that one of the most important factors to watch over the coming months will be how public sector jobs respond and cope with the economic downturn.

If the positivity which has emerged in the UK jobs market is to continue companies must take more care of their employees, according to Richard Doherty, group vice president of solutions and marketing at Jobpartners.
