A new TV series called “Save Our Boozer” could safeguard hundreds of catering jobs in pubs around the UK.
The program, which is hosted by prize-winning landlord Jay Smith, focuses on guiding small pubs back to life.
Smith commented to Eating Out magazine and said: “These boozers are the backbone of British society. Lose them and we lose our identity. I want this series to really inspire people to get on board with my passion - to bring back the great British boozer.
“By showing viewers how these five communities get their own pub up and running, I hope others will be inspired to do the same. Of course, there is the risk that it could all go horribly wrong, in which case it may end up being an example of how not to do it!”
Smith also mentioned that communities should work together to protect the pubs in their area as it is good for tourism.
Apart from contributing to British culture, pubs also create jobs for many residents.
A pub in Yarcombe, the Yarcombe Inn has already opened its doors again after featuring on the show.
“This is a serious venture – not just a TV series, which will offer communities a real opportunity to restore their pub,” Smith said to a group of 80 people gathered at the Yarcombe Inn a couple of weeks ago.
He added: “We will challenge local people to revive the heart of their community.”
